Wine Grape is the classic vine behind wine, table grapes and raisins, self-fertile and bearing alone within about three years of planting. Beyond the fruit, the leaves, tendrils and flowers are all edible, the seed presses into a culinary oil, and the annual winter prunings double as livestock fodder and mulch. Two pests rather than cold set its real limit - phylloxera and Pierce's disease - so almost everywhere it is grown grafted onto resistant American rootstock rather than left on its own roots.
