Winter Purslane

Claytonia sibirica

Winter purslane is a small, cool-season salad green closely related to miner's lettuce, with a mild flavour and an earthy aftertaste its cousin doesn't have. It is native to damp, shaded, acidic ground in maritime climates, so it wants a shaded bed amended toward acid with plenty of organic matter to hold moisture - the opposite of open, alkaline clay. Sown in early autumn and finished by late spring, it dodges summer heat entirely and produces leaf right through winter. Left to bolt, it self-sows freely, and a hot summer caps any spread on its own every year.
