Zexmenia

Wedelia acapulcensis

Zexmenia is a shrubby aster relative with rough, sandpapery leaves and small golden orange daisies that bloom from spring through fall. It stands upright and flowers heavily in full sun but relaxes into a low, reclining groundcover with fewer blooms at the shaded edge of a woods. Where winters get cold it dies back to the crown and returns in mid spring rather than staying evergreen. Its flowers feed adult butterflies and its leaves feed their caterpillars, including several species that use it as a larval host.
