Bread Wheat
Triticum aestivum
Bread Wheat is an annual grass grown worldwide as a grain crop, thriving in full sun on a wide range of soils but killed outright by flooding. Its seed is milled into flour for bread and pasta or cooked and sprouted whole, and the plant doubles as winter pasture and hay for cattle and sheep, and as a cover crop that scavenges nutrients and chokes out weeds between seasons. Sowing date matters more than any survival threshold: winter types need a cold spell before they head out and spring types do not, and how early or late a stand goes in decides how much organic matter it leaves behind.
