Carolina Jessamine

Gelsemium sempervirens

An evergreen twining vine with sweetly scented, butter-yellow trumpet flowers that open in late winter and early spring, well ahead of most other bloom. It covers a trellis, fence, arbor or small tree readily and stays attractive year-round with glossy foliage. Every part of the plant is poisonous if eaten, including its nectar and pollen, so it needs siting away from grazing stock, curious children and active beehives. It tolerates soil pH from strongly acid to strongly alkaline in organically rich, well-drained ground.
