Catchfly Prairie Gentian is an upright annual wildflower that grows to about three feet, topped through the warm season by large, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of blue and purple with a wide, conspicuous throat. It favors low, consistently wet ground - sandy coastal flats, wet prairies, and saline to freshwater marshes - and tolerates standing water and seasonal poor drainage that would drown most other wildflowers. Its long bloom season from late spring through fall makes it a steady nectar source in the wetland margins it colonizes.
