Dewberry
Rubus trivialis
Dewberry is a prostrate, trailing bramble rather than an upright blackberry - low tangled mounds of creeping woody stems that root wherever a tip touches soil. It flowers white in March and April, well ahead of most cane fruit, and yields juicy sweet berries eaten raw, cooked or preserved. Its prickly, ground-hugging habit makes it a nuisance across a footpath but a genuinely useful living mat across a field or orchard floor, tolerating everything from dry sandy ground to seasonally wet soil.
