Jute
Corchorus capsularis
Jute is a fast-growing, heat-loving plant grown across the humid tropics and subtropics for the coarse, water-resistant fibre stripped from its stems - the source of burlap and sackcloth. Its young leaves are eaten raw or cooked as a mucilaginous, high-protein potherb, and older leaves are dried and used to thicken soup. It needs full sun, very fertile soil and a long, hot, humid season, and does not tolerate cool or dry conditions.
