Lowbush Blueberry
Vaccinium angustifolium
Lowbush blueberry is a low, twiggy shrub of cold, acid barrens from Labrador to Saskatchewan and south into New England and the Great Lakes states - it's the plant behind the commercial wild-blueberry crop. The berries are small, very sweet with a hint of honey, and ripen earlier than any other commercially grown blueberry; they get eaten raw, cooked into preserves, or dried like raisins. It spreads by stolons into low colonies that carpet and shade the ground it takes, and needs consistently acid, lime-free soil and cool summers - it goes chlorotic wherever lime is present.
