Oil Palm

Elaeis guineensis

Oil Palm is a slow-growing single-stemmed palm reaching roughly 15 m tall grown almost entirely for the oil pressed from its fruit and kernel - the most productive vegetable oil crop by yield per hectare. It needs full sun year-round warmth and 1500 to 3000 mm of well-distributed rainfall tolerating occasional non-stagnant flooding but not standing water or any frost. It begins bearing fruit around its third year and keeps producing for decades with harvested fruit clusters commonly running well over 30 kg apiece.
