Açaí Palm is a fast-growing clumping palm of the Amazon floodplain, sending up to twelve stems from one base. It is grown for the antioxidant-rich fruit pulp, taken as juice or pulp, and for palm heart cut from the growing tip of a stem - because the clump carries several stems, one can be harvested for its heart while the rest keep growing, unlike a single-stemmed palm. It needs real heat and humidity year-round, not just frost-free winters, and is killed by chilling well above freezing, so it belongs to a wet tropical climate rather than a merely mild one.
