Spotted Deadnettle

Lamium maculatum

A low, mat-forming, semi-evergreen perennial groundcover grown for its silvery- or white-splashed foliage and small two-lipped flowers in pink, purple or white that open in late spring. It spreads steadily by trailing stems that root wherever they touch the ground, filling in bare shady ground under trees and shrubs where grass struggles, and stays easy to control by shearing back the runners. It prefers evenly moist, well-drained, shaded ground and tolerates some dryness, but bare patches and decline are common through long, hot, humid summers.
