Standing Cypress
Ipomopsis rubra
Standing Cypress is an upright biennial wildflower that spends its first year as a low, ferny rosette of finely divided foliage before sending up a tall, mostly unbranched flowering stalk in its second year. Dense spikes of narrow, trumpet-shaped red flowers with yellow-speckled throats open from late spring into summer and are a strong draw for hummingbirds, long-tongued bees and butterflies. It thrives in dry, sandy or rocky, well-drained ground in full sun to light shade and is prone to root rot where the soil stays wet.
