Garden strawberry is a low, rosette-forming perennial grown worldwide for its sweet, fragrant fruit, eaten fresh or preserved into jam. It multiplies on its own by sending out runners that root at every node, quickly forming a low mat and producing free daughter plants for replanting. It fruits in its first year and bears heaviest in full sun, tolerating some shade at the cost of yield, though individual crowns weaken after a few years and are best renewed from their own runners.
