Swamp Sunflower
Helianthus angustifolius
Swamp Sunflower is a tall herbaceous perennial that produces masses of bright yellow, daisy-like flowers from late summer into fall, at a time when few other natives are still blooming. It spreads by rhizomes to form dense colonies in consistently moist to wet ground, tolerating heavy clay as well as sandy soil. The flowers draw a wide range of pollinators, and the seed heads that follow feed songbirds through winter.
