Sweet Orange

Citrus × sinensis

Sweet Orange is a mandarin-pomelo hybrid grown across the subtropics, its fruit eaten fresh or juiced with the rind taken for marmalade and flavouring oil. It needs a mean temperature above 18 C to fruit well and cannot take winter lows into the mid 20s F outdoors, so anywhere colder it has to be grown in a container and wheeled under cover, or under glass, for winter. The juicing residue is also a real livestock feed: dried citrus pulp rates as an energy concentrate close to barley, though it runs calcium-heavy and can cause rumen problems in ruminants and limonin toxicity in pigs and poultry if overfed.
