Triticosecale

Triticale is a deliberate cross of wheat and rye, bred to combine wheat's grain quality with rye's toughness, and it exists only as cultivated stands - there is no wild population. The grain carries more protein than wheat but weaker gluten, so it is usually milled and blended with wheat flour for bread rather than used alone. Growers value it as much for winter grazing and silage as for flour, and it tolerates lighter, drier, more acid or alkaline soil than wheat while shrugging off the rusts and mildew that trouble it.
