Texas Bluebonnet
Lupinus texensis
Texas bluebonnet is an annual lupine of prairies, roadsides and open fields across the south-central United States and northern Mexico, prized as a spring wildflower for its spikes of blue pea-like flowers tipped white. As a legume it fixes atmospheric nitrogen through root nodules, improving the ground it grows in. It reseeds itself readily from year to year once established, so a planting tends to return without replanting.
